Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU)

Common name:
Polyphenylsulfone

Chemical Acronym:
PPSU

Common resin tradenames:

Radel R

Polyphenylsulfone is a high-performance amorphous polymer offering a 356°F (180°C) continuous use temperature and excellent resistance to hot water and steam including common sterilization cycles used within the medical industry. It is inherently flame resistant like PEI and PSU but with better chemical resistance and impact resistance.

Polyphenylsulfone  is  most often used for reusable medical devices especially trays used to autoclave surgical instruments. It is also used for food processing equipment parts that are exposed to hot water. Introduced in the late 1980’s by Amoco (now Solvay/Synsqo) it was introduced as the next generation sulfone polymer with improved ductility and chemical resistance. Today PPSU is widely used for both injection molded and machined parts.
